… tells about our travels between 2002-2010 in “Saigoku”, known as Japan's Western Lands or Kansai. The common thread in the book is a pilgrimage dating back to the 11th century. The path leads through Saigoku, to far away mountain temples but also to busy tourist attractions in the cities of Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Osaka. The Saigoku Pilgrimage combines altogether 33 Buddhist temples, some of which are over 1300 years old. We discovered the pilgrimage purely by chance, when visiting a temple near our apartment in the city of Uji. It was perfectly timed as the pilgrimage helped us to choose among the 10000 of temples one theoretically could visit in the Western Lands.
