.. is a synonym for "Kansai". The term originates from a historical
division of Japan in the lands east and west of a very idiosyncratic
barrier. Instead of remaining in one place, it wandered further east
over time. Once the Western Lands ended near the city of Otsu at Lake
Biwa. Later on, the Western Lands stretched 400 km further east until
the town of Hakone at the foot of Mount Fuji. The Eastern Lands
include the prefectures around Tokyo and Yokohama. The Western Lands
included the cities of Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Osaka.
